Currently Watching :: Ouran

In preparation for our next podcast I have decided to start watching jdramas/doramas this month..While I must admit its been tough since I already miss my beloved kdramas friends keep telling me that I'm going to get hooked... we'll see bout that...

First thoughts

While the anime wasn't exactly mind blowing it was still enjoyable. Its pretty amazing that the same things I loved about the anime, the fun over the top characters have translated very well into this real life version. I can't begin to tell you how much it irks me when characters you love from an anime or manga are totally reimagined and become something completely different. Like seriously, don't mess with a good thing. (the biggest fail for me was Miwako from the live action Paradise Kiss -- thats another story tho)

Yamamoto Yusuke as Suou Tamak

The drama is currently on the same level as the anime was for me. Its cute. The actors are fun. You still totally love Tamaki despite his self centered ways. Its nice.

Then again I'm only on episode 3. lol.

Stay tuned.

Flower Boy Ramyun Shop :: AWFULNESS

the bad news

I recently watched Flower Boy Ramyun Shop and I feel like I wasted 16 episodes of life that I can never get back. It was awful. With the amount of press this drama got I thought I would some idea about the lack of meat this drama had but I was totally blindsided.

Then again when everything anyone talks about is the attractiveness of the cast and nothing about the actually plot that should have been a clear warning to stay away.

What was so bad about it? There was nothing to get excited about. The plot was weak, the character's actions are sooo obvious, and there's no big shocker. waaah wahhh. LAME.

the good news

Despite how I feel about this drama, FBRS still has three things going for it.

1. Lee Chung Ah/Yang Eun Bi makes super cute faces.

2. Cute Boys

3. ................ there was only 16 episodes

Finals Thoughts

Whether or not you decide to watch this drama or not don't say I didn't warn you. You'll want to like this drama. You'll wait and wait for something better to happen in the next episode. You'll come to the final episode and be like huh??! This was it?

Save yourself some time. Don't watch this.

PODCAST!!

The podcast w/Loc is finally finished so please check it out and let me know what you think!!

Running Man :: the Basics

I've mentioned before how I'm the biggest fan Korean variety shows yet they seem to be growing in popularity. Running Man is one that has a tremendous following and is currently airing in Korea. I was curious to learn more about this show so I opted to question someone who watches it regularly, Gummimochi

For those of you who don't know Gummimochi is the recap writer for Running Man over at Dramabeans & lets just say she's an expert.

Gummimochi :: Ha! If hours of watching variety = expert. The thing with a lot of variety shows in general, is that for most of them, you can jump right in (with a lot of talk shows) but don't expect them to explain the premise like they do in American shows. Then there are others which I'd highly suggest watching from the beginning (like Running Man, 1N2D, and certain couples of WGM) so you know how the relationships have evolved and get the nuances in their interactions. But many people have enjoyed just dropping in on certain episodes and finding it just as fun!

Q: What's the basic set up for Running Man? From what I read online I'm thinking a show along the lines of Fear Factor (maybe not that extreme) or The Amazing Race (tho not as long)?

Gummimochi :: Running Man at present, is very different than what it started as, but the basic premise is the same: set up your teams, give them missions and games to work at, and receive a Running Ball or a prize. In the beginning, the staff stuck to the skeletal format of this setup and invited celebrity guests. When it gained a foothold over some time, they swapped some games (like Hide-and-Seek, and  Tea Time) and introduced "specials" or themes. They took notice of its huge international fanbase and also sent them abroad several times (like Thailand, or quite recently, Hong Kong). There was some outcry from fans who said that Running Man mirrors 1N2D (1 Night 2 Days), but I think that the format has changed so much by now, that Running Man can stand on its own two feet.

Is it always just guys that do the missions/games?

Gummimochi :: Do you mean if they are the "heroes"/ "spies" of the week? If so, then definitely not! You've got Song Ji-hyo as a regular cast member. She's commonly known as the "Ace" - she's totally awesome whenever she has to deceive her other cast members or complete a mission. She's the strategist, just as quick as her male counterparts, and knows when to turn on her charm. There are certain members who have been the "spies" more than once, and it's usually Yoo Jae-suk, Kim Jong-kook, and Haha (and the consequence of this is that the others get very suspicious of them).

If you mean if it's just guys who participate in the missions/games, then I'd say no to that too - everyone, including the guests participate in the missions!

Who is Running Man's target audience? Men/Women? Young/Old?
Gummimochi ::  Running Man's target audience would probably range within the teens to the adult generation, although there are both kids and older adults alike who also enjoy and know of Running Man. The reason for this is the casts' age (I believe most of the younger generation know of these celebrities more than the older population, apart from Yoo Jae-suk, who everyone knows) and because the games are constantly changing, I think that appeals to a younger demographic. I also think that it appeals to both men and women alike (although I believe the SNSD special probably drew in a bigger fanboy audience).

If I wanted to start watching where would you recommend I start? At the very beginning? Or just pick it up with the current episode?

Gummimochi ::  I don't think it really matters when you start watching Running Man, which is the beauty of it. If you'd like to start in the beginning, I would personally recommend watching from Episode 2, because the pilot episode was both long (2 hours) and quite confusing. This is the episode where they tried out a basic format and it stayed the same for some time before they incorporated new elements - so starting here will help them get used to the show, and know our cast members in depth. There are, however, many people who just pick up random episodes or watch the most current one, because it seemed hilarious!

Any other key things to know about Running Man?

Gummimochi :: The cast members have adopted a pseudo-persona and nicknames, which can be confusing for someone who's just starting out on Running Man. For instance, why is Ji Suk-jin referred to as "Big Nose Hyung"? The easy answer is that Suk-jin has a large schnoz. Others, like the Monday Couple (Gary and Ji-hyo), aren't so obvious. The answer to that is because Running Man commonly shoots on Mondays, and this loveline/pairing was semi-created early in the show when they first joked around they were only a couple whenever Running Man shoots. I've got a list of Running Man Nicknames on my wordpress, so you can refer to that for more info.

Hope these helped - enjoy your Running Man experience! You can always read current Running Man recaps over at Dramabeans every Sunday :)

Makeup Storage :: Help

Currently this is how I store my makeup...

When I was in high school I really wanted one of the MAC makeup storage kits but they were super expensive. After talking it over with my father we both thought a toolbox would be a great and cheaper solution.

While this has worked great and I really have no complaints about using a Craftsman toolbox I can't help but to start rethink it. For a high school girl this was perfect, and as you can see it was decorated with *love*

...but now I'm in my twenties and almost feel like I've outgrown it... am I overthinking this? What do you use to store your make up? Or maybe I should stick with this system since I love it so much but just upgrade to a new all black toolbox?

I need your help. plz?

Bachelor's Vegetable Store :: First Thoughts

A couple of days ago I told you about several dramas I was wanting to watch. Well I finally decided on one to watch - Bachelor's Vegetable Store.. Here's what I have to say about it.

Bachelor's Vegetable Store is the story about a young man's journey to create what will be later be a highly, successful franchise in Korea. I really didn't do much reading about this drama beforehand except for the fact that Wang Ji Hye would be one of the lead females. ANd wow. I was in for a shock!

I should forewarn everyone that I generally tend to watch romantic comedies. Why? Because who doesn't love a good love story with a few laughs! Seriously though, I stick to romantic comedies because I don't like being sad or seeing someone die. Simply not enjoyable to me.

Clearly I should have read a little more about this drama before I started watching. Its a MELOdrama. Therefore this drama was created to exploit the viewer's emotions as much as possible and boy does it!

While I don't want to give anything away just yet since this drama is still really new (only 8 episodes have aired so far) I will say that despite its sad and sometimes creepy undertones I can see the sunshine on the horizon. The main character, Tae Yang has an incredible spirit that is not over the top but rather just enough it be almost inspiring.  I can see that good things are coming for him and I want to do be there when they do! Plus I truly love the actors! They are doing such a great job of connecting with the viewers, especially the child actors used in the first two episodes. uh-MAZING.

Oh Jae Moo does a great job getting your sympathy!!

I will admit that this drama isn't something I would have chose to watch had I known it wasn't just a straight romance but in the end I'm glad I did. Its good to leave your comfort zone every once and awhile.

So be sure and check it out! You can watch it over on Dramafever.

Letter to an Idol

Dear Idol, specifically Kim Hyun Joong, (but Jang Geun Suk you should listen too!)

Why have you worked so hard to make me fall in love with you on one platform only to abandon me for another...? Sure I was a late bloomer. I wasn't a fan from the get-go, so I deserve to be kept waiting. But how much more time must pass till I see you in another drama? [At this point I would even take a variety show!] Please come back soon or I'm afraid my fragile heart will soon go to another...

Sincerely,

Disgruntled Housewife

Currently Watching :: OVERLOAD

Since I've been watching so much We Got Married it seems I have fallen behind on my dramas! There are so many out there that I currently want to watch I thought I would give you a heads up about what kdramas are on my "to be watched" list...

Already Aired KDramas to be Watched

Dream High

My manager swears by this drama and thats saying a lot. After watching BOF she seriously couldn't watch any other kdrama until she decided to watch Dream High. One of the reason it didn't initially catch my eye because there are no stand out familiar faces I loved. Reason I want to watch it now? Other than the fact that I will get eternal love from my manager, I also want to watch this drama because Dream High 2 will be premiering at the end of the month. Its not very often that kdramas get a second season (even though its a whole new cast) so Dream High must be worth the hype. We'll see.

Flower Boy Ramyun Shop

Again, within the world of kdramas there are very few that get sequels or second seasons. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop is actually a part of Oh! Boy Series that will entail several different shows. While the Oh! Boy Series deserves a post on its own (which I'm sure I'll get around to but you'll just have to head over to Dramabeans in the meantime) but basically all the dramas in this series will be aimed at younger audience with pretty "flower boy" leads. Honestly I didn't know all this until just the other day but it sounds like a good thing, well at least if you're a female viewer! lol. Anyways its on my to do list.

Currently Airing Drama to be Watched

Bachelor’s Vegetable Store

This drama I want to watch for the sole purpose of Wang Ji Hye. If you don't remember she is the same actress who played in both Personal Taste & Protect the Boss. While she usually plays a cutthroat, evil character I'm hoping that she will actually be his leading lady. I really have no clue but saw that she was in this drama and instantly wanted to watch.

As soon as I wrap up this post I'll probably start watching one of these dramas. Let me know if you have seen or are watching any of these dramas because its always fun to share the journey! lol. I hope you all have a great night/morning!

Fat Cat's New MV

Have you guys checked out Fat Cat's new single "Is Being Pretty Everything?" [thanks to @Dramafever for sharing!]

When I saw the teaser I thought the MV would be along the lines of Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For" but it actually wasn't which was kinda a nice surprise. Along with being very visual appealing the song actually has message that I think most girls can relate to.

So who is Fat Cat?

I asked myself the same thing after I checked out the video. I really hadn't heard about her until earlier this week when I saw the teasers.  She is still a relatively new artist having only debuted in September (2011) yet has a commanding stage presence that has people talking.

These days there aren't many artists (KPOP) who debut without a group. While there are many idols who choose to go solo after working with group, I think the fact that Fat Cat is able to generate such interest in her solo act is something in itself.

BTW I tried to access her Official site today but couldn't because it crashed, but you can check out her twitter account :: FatCat0_0

We Got Married :: The Basics

I recently started watching We Got Married. Since the show is so big and is currently in its third season I will be writing several posts about the series labeled
"We Got Married :: ______"

If you visit almost any Korean entertainment site or blog its almost certain you will find some mention of the MBC variety show We Got Married. Currently in its third season, We Got Married is not a show that you can easily ignore. WGM not only has a tremendous following, but has also become the show that many idols/celebrities want to be on!

I started watching We Got Married based on the fact that I simply couldn't escape it any longer. I was getting tired of reading articles the constantly mentioned the show. [Don't get me wrong not this is not an every day occurrence but definitely something that happens almost weekly.] Thus I set out to watch this very popular variety show.

So where should should you start watching? Start from the beginning? Watch only the episodes that your favorite celebrities are in?

Where did I start? Right at the beginning with episode 1. The show is a sweet mixture of laughs & sweet moments. I don't regret starting at the beginning (first episode aired in 2008), but I probably wouldn't recommend it. I think at this point in show if you are a fan of a certain idol/celebrity I would start at the episode where they are introduced. Otherwise you might find yourself not really into whats going on and constantly wondering how many episodes are left till they are on.

Worth the hype?

Yes and No. Korean celebrities' privacy is respected more in Korea. Because of that you won't find quite the amount of candid pictures as you would in the United States. While this is a great thing for the celebrities it can leave the fans always wanting more and this is why I think WGM is quite the hit. Its almost as if you've been invited to see what they are like on a day to day basis.

There also the fact that you are seeing them in a relationship and how the act towards that person. You'd think that fact that you're watching your favorite celebrity in relationship would be such a downer (especially since fans can become rather upset when celebrities are in a real relationship) but its actually really endearing! One of my favorite examples of this is Kim Hyun Joong. Don't get me wrong, he was still Mr. Cool the entire time he's on but you also get to see his human side [like when he didn't catch fish when they spent the whole afternoon fishing or he is asking the cameraman to kill a bug for him!].

No because there are so many episodes. I mean how many times do we need to watch them try to cook or "almost kiss." Plus some of the couples are just kinda boring.

Where can I watch?

MySoju & Veoh.com both have WGM subbed. MySoju is great because since each episode of WGM is in several parts, it has the link on the right hand side of the next video you're supposed to watch. Veoh, on the other hand is somewhat of a pain because after you finish watching one video you have to search again for the next part of the episode. I will admit that lately I have been watching more on Veoh.com because MySoju has been taking forever to load and I'm not sure why.

Final Thoughts.

I am no where near being done with this series as I am currently only on Episode 20 of Season 1. I am bummed that I waited so long to jump on the WGM bandwagon though. Out of the original couples I think the only person I knew was Andy (from Shinhwa) but because  I started watching at the beginning I now love CrownJ, Solbi, Saori, and Hwangbo.

While Kim Hyun Joong is still super cute, I'm looking forward to seeing Kangin (Super Junior), Taeyeon (SNSD), Jung Yonghwa, UEE, and Leeteuk (Super Junior).

So if you're not wanting to watch the 38493483 episodes that have aired I would definitely recommend at least checking out the episodes with your favorite celebrities. You'll probably love them even more than you already do and maybe even fall in love with a new one!

TheKoreanTourist

TheKoreanTourist is such a cute YouTube channel that I just had to share.

Basically TheKoreanTourist, aka Alyse (not sure how she spells it), shares different things in her daily life as a university student in Korea. Her videos vary from displaying & talking about what she received in the month's glossybox to visiting Seoul Tower.

One of the things that makes her so likeable is that she is just a normal everyday girl! She currently has 34 videos posted to her YouTube page so I hope you take a moment to browse and watch a few! You won't be disappointed.

KoreaStay

From WashingtonPost.com

Happy New Years!! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Years Eve =]

With 2012 already here there seems to be a plethora of articles online about all the amazing things to see or do this year.  CNNGo.com recently published an article 12 Reasons To Visit Korea in 2012 and one of the reasons listed was KoreaStay.

KoreaStay is a homestay program set up by the Korea Tourism Organization. While I am sure these programs might exist in other countries I would be soooo skeptical of the accommodations that I probably wouldn't take advantage of this great opportunity.  However when considering something like this in the country of Korea, it might just be worth it.

Why choose a homestay?

Some people like their space. If you're one of those people than KoreaStay probably isn't for you, but if your someone who wants to be immersed in Korean culture and need a friendly face to help you do so, then you might want to check this out. I think if I traveled to Korea this would be something I would want to try. Being in an unfamiliar place with a different culture having a friend to rely on might be the difference of making an already fun trip an amazing adventure.

This program is still really new, so feedback is still rather scarce, however looking at their website the program seems really thorough and well thought out. Both the traveler (you) and the host (the Korean home in the program) have to submit applications and be approved by the government before partaking in this program.

Visual of the application process on the VisitKorea Site.

Still unsure? There is two things in particular which made me really want to try this program out.
  1. Price :: 40,000-70,000 wons :: This is probably one of the most affordable accommodation options that would allow you a clean place to sleep, breakfast the next morning, and a friendly face (if not more - some homes offer cultural programs such as guided tours, cultural dress, etc).
  2. Host Search :: One of the great things about this program is on the VisitKorea site you can actually search through the hosts currently in the program.  If gives you information about the host family as well as details and pictures about where you will be staying.  You can even search by region to find a homestay in the area where you are wanting to visit!

If you have tried this program or know someone who did I would definitely be interested to hear what they have to say! While I was reading about it today I couldn't help but feel excited and interested even though I won't be traveling to Korea anytime in the next 6 months. Regardless its a cool program and maybe something to think about if your planning trip there.
